You get an invite to an event and there is a dress code – but what are you expected to wear? Getting a dress code on an invite can make it easier if you know what it means, but harder if you don’t! We are here to break them down and help you understand what is expected from your dress code.

  • White Tie

This is the most formal dress code.

For women, this typically involves wearing a full-length evening gown, often with an elaborate design.

Long gloves, often white, and accessories, such as fine jewellery, are expected.

Heels are a must, and hairstyles are always formal and styled.

For men, they are expected to wear a black tailcoat with satin or grosgrain lapels, paired with black trousers that have a satin stripe down the side.

A white formal shirt with a stiff collar and a white bow tie is worn.

Black patent leather shoes are standard, and some events may call for white gloves.

  • Black Tie

A formal but slightly less strict dress code than white tie.

Women wear a floor-length evening gown and elegant accessories, such as jewellery, and heels are standard.

A sleek, polished hairstyle is also preferred.

Men wear a tuxedo, typically black or midnight blue, with a black formal bow tie.

A white dress shirt, black formal shoes, and either a cummerbund or a formal waistcoat complete the look.

  • Black Tie Optional

This offers more flexibility, allowing women to wear a long gown or a formal cocktail dress. A sophisticated cocktail dress is a great choice for these types of events.

Heels or dressy flats are worn, and accessories should still be formal but can be a bit more understated.

Men can wear a tuxedo or opt for a dark suit (navy, black, or charcoal) with a tie. A formal dress shirt and polished dress shoes are essential.

  • Cocktail Attire

Cocktail attire is semi-formal, often worn to evening parties or social events. Women typically wear a cocktail dress, knee-length or slightly above.

Dressy shoes, like heels or elegant flats, are paired with stylish accessories such as a clutch and jewellery.

Men typically wear a dark suit (navy or charcoal) with a dress shirt and tie. Polished dress shoes are expected, and a more relaxed approach can be taken with accessories, but they should still be sophisticated.

  • Business Formal

For professional events, women wear a business suit with a skirt or trouser, or a formal structured dress.

The look should be polished, with simple accessories.

Shoes are typically closed-toe heels or flats, and the outfit should be tailored and neat.

For professional events, business formal attire is expected. Men typically wear a dark suit, often in navy, black, or charcoal, paired with a dress shirt and tie. Polished dress shoes complete the look. The attire should be neat and polished, with a professional, tailored fit.

  • Business Casual

Business casual is a more relaxed, yet still professional dress code.

For example, women often wear a blouse paired with tailored trousers or a skirt, or a simple dress.

Casual, neat shoes such as flats, loafers, or low heels are appropriate.

Accessories should be modest and professional.

Men wear slacks or chinos with a button-up shirt, either with or without a tie.

Dress shoes, loafers, or even clean sneakers can be worn.

The look should still be neat and polished, but less formal.
